Dear Parent/Carer

Ofsted report – finally released!

Thomas Hickman is a school that ‘does not stand still!’

After what seems like an excruciatingly long wait, we are thrilled to share with you our overwhelmingly successful Ofsted report – to be clear from the start, it was so successful that the school have not been given any development points to ‘do better’ which is an extraordinary result!

The inspection outcome records that the school have ‘improved significantly across all areas’ since the previous inspection. You will know that previously the school was awarded ‘Good’. Therefore, to have it recorded that the school have improved significantly across all areas means that Thomas Hickman has moved beyond good in all areas; as a reminder the Ofsted categories in order are Requires Improvement, Good then Outstanding. Our inspector shared that this was a ‘rare’ judgement to which we are extremely proud.

An Ofsted report is limited to 750 words, so whist what is captured within the report is incredibly positive, it is brief. I have therefore captured some of the key elements below to particularly celebrate why and how we were evaluated to such a high standard;

  • Pupils are happy and kept safe and pupils behave extremely well. The school’s culture is supportive and understanding and relationships between staff and pupils are trusting, caring and nurturing,
  • The school has very high ambitions for all pupils including those with Special education needs and/or disabilities. As a result, all children develop a real depth of understanding.
  • Pupils are committed to school life and enthusiastic about their learning. Pupils’ work is consistently of a high quality across different subjects.
  • Early years is of a high quality and children get off to a really great start!
  • Staff are highly trained and have secure subject knowledge because of regular training
  • The school’s curriculum is meticulously planned and personal development is a significant strength.

The inspector shared with leaders and governors much, much more than what is recorded, it was so refreshing that she understood the uniqueness of Thomas Hickman and recognised the hard work of the staff to make the school the best it can be.

Furthermore, she described the school as ‘relentless’ which means that staff never give up on your children – we are always fighting to give them the best possible start to their education, exploring new strategies, different initiatives and trailblazing new ideas.  I’d like to publicly thank every single member of staff for all that they do - day in, day out.

Lastly, the ‘best’ outcome a successful school can have recorded in a report for safeguarding is that it is ‘effective’, but our inspector verbally fed-back to governors that there wouldn’t be ‘enough words anyway’ to express the lengths that the staff go to keep children safe. This was a special moment.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support, we cannot thank you enough for your positivity: we all share the same ambitions.

I hope you enjoy reading the report. We are incredibly proud of the findings, but of course, we are most proud of our THS BIRDS!

Warm regards

Pippa Brand-Benee and the Thomas Hickman Team
